Portable handheld RFID readers

Handhelf RFID ReaderRFID implementations utilize fixed readers as well as handhelds to accomplish different tasks.  Each, however, must be used to its strength to gain productivity.  Operator frustration will lead to inaccurate system performance and inconsistent data.

Handheld RFID readers are used primarily when the reader must be brought to the product whereas a fixed mount reader is used when a product is brought to a reader. This key differentiator helps customers review their processes and pick the right type of reader based on their needs.  For example, a DoD contractor who ships large metal crates and small cartons to the Army may find it easier to setup a handheld reader to verify serial numbers and validate it against the order than a fixed reader.  The fixed reader system would need the proper material handling system to bring the metal container and the boxes through a read zone and have all of the tags read 100% of the time.

Handhelds are Computers

RFID handheld readers are small Windows based computers that have RFID readers built inside.  This allows the readers to prompt users to start and stop reading, display tags for verification, send the data to the proper database, and signal the operator when the task is completed.  The typical system is setup using real-time wireless networks so data is consistent and fresh.

Although rather expensive compared to their non-RFID counterparts, RFID handhelds when used properly can be a useful tool to complement any RFID system.

The most popular handheld applications are:

  • Shipping confirmation/Counting
  • Physical inventory
  • Object searches
  • Retail garment sorting
  • Receiving
  • RFID tag data verification
  • Work-In-Process verification
